Bologna is a large and spreading city, home to a population approaching 400,000. Situated on the northern side of Italy, the city of Bologna is known for its appealing streets, which are lined with almost 48 km / 30 miles of arcades, providing an important route out of the city, towards the eye-catching Basilica di San Luca.

The heart of Bologna is easy to explore on foot, with many attractions and historic buildings standing close to each other. For an excellent overview of the area, head to the top of Due Torri at the base of via Rizzoli on Piazza di Porta Ravegnana, which is without doubt one of Bologna's most noteworthy landmarks.

Central Bologna is based around two spacious piazzas, the Piazza Maggiore and the Piazza Nettuno. Featuring the enormous Gothic church of San Petronio, Piazza Maggiore is an important part of local life, while the Piazza Nettuno is most famous for its striking Fountain of Neptune.
